What Is Leptospirosis?

Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease that can be transmitted to humans and animals through contact with water, soil, or food contaminated with the urine of infected animals, including rats. The bacteria can enter the body through:

  • Cuts or abrasions in the skin

  • Mucous membranes (eyes, nose, mouth)

  • Consumption of contaminated water or food

Leptospirosis can lead to symptoms ranging from mild flu-like signs to severe complications affecting the liver and kidneys. In some cases, the disease can be serious if not treated promptly.

 How Rats Spread Disease

Rats don’t need to bite to transmit disease. They leave behind urine wherever they travel — across floors, in cabinets, near food storage, and in outdoor areas like yards and gardens. When these contaminated areas are touched or when rainwater carries the bacteria into garden hoses, puddles, or other water sources, the risk of exposure increases.

Children, outdoor enthusiasts, gardeners, and pets are especially at risk because they may come into contact with areas where rats have been active.

Signs You Might Have a Rat Problem

Knowing when to seek professional help is key. Common signs that rats may be present include:

  • Droppings in cupboards, drawers, or along walls

  • Gnaw marks on food packaging or wiring

  • Rustling or scurrying sounds in walls or ceilings

  • Footprints or greasy marks along baseboards

  • Nests made from shredded materials

If you notice any of these signs, it’s important to act quickly before the situation becomes more extensive.
